Alternative and Integrative Medicine Committee
We are a new committee that was created in 2011 to bridge a gap in our pharmacy curriculum and to prepare our pharmacy students better for their future careers as pharmacists. At community health fairs we educate the community about the safe use of supplements and proper labeling practices of alternative medicines. We also help educate the community on replacing salt with herbs and spices in the DASH diet. We look forward to enriching the education of pharmacy students through our new guest lecture series and workshops that focus on different topics in alternative medicine. Lastly, we currently work on a research project, in collaboration with Pacific faculty and experts in natural medicine, called the “Pacific List.” It is a list of natural products or dietary supplements to avoid using in the elderly that mimics the Beers Criteria commonly used in pharmacy practice.

American Lung Association
Mirroring the mission statement of the American Lung Association, the ALA Chapter at the University of the Pacific seeks to prevent lung disease while promoting lung health throughout the University and the Stockton Community. This is done through several innovative and interactive programs that advocate the importance of prevention and treatment of lung diseases. Our annual events include: “What Kids Think about Smoking” Program at local elementary schools, The Great American Smoke Out, Smoking Cessation and Asthma Clinics at San Joaquin County General Hospital, and many others. We are working together to help the world breathe easier!

Northern California College of Clinical Pharmacy
The newest committee serving the clinical aspect of pharmacy combines with the other schools of pharmacy in Northern California to represent the student division of NCCCP, which is a part of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy. This committee currently collaborates with the other schools of pharmacy to put on annual events such as a residency panel discussion in the fall and a special topic with guest speakers in the spring. Our annual collaboration with other schools further strengthens our unity as pharmacists. This committee not only promotes residencies but leadership in the pharmacy profession.

Operation Diabetes
Diabetes is a serious lifelong disease that affects more than 16 million people in the U.S. alone. As pharmacists, we will be a major source of information and therefore, it is important to keep abreast on the latest developments on diabetes. The members of this committee volunteer at local health fairs, fundraise money for prevention and research, teach students the proper method of using blood glucose monitors, and invite guest speakers to keep students informed.

Operation Heartburn
Operation Heartburn is an active committee on campus, since nearly 60 million Americans get heartburn every month. The committee is involved in promoting heartburn awareness in the community through screenings and educational sessions in various venues. During the screenings, they do an initial assessment of the patient looking at diseases, drug allergies, medications as well as the frequency and severity of their heartburn symptoms. After making sure that their symptoms are, in fact, due to heartburn, they then recommend both pharmacologic therapy and lifestyle modifications.

Operation Immunization
Each year, over 60,000 Americans die of vaccine-preventable diseases. For every child who dies from a vaccine-preventable disease, 400 adults will die from vaccine-preventable diseases. To help address this issue, APhA-ASP has collaborated with the Student National Pharmaceutical Association (SNPhA) and the American Association Academy of Pharmacy Practice and Management (APhA-APPM) to develop Operation Immunization: Pharmacy Students and Practitioners Protecting the Public Health. This committee strives to educate the public about the importance of vaccination as well as to promote implementation of immunization services in pharmacies by participating in flu clinics during the fall semester. The committee plans to immunize the Pacific athletic department, Pacific health science students, Pacific law students on the Sacramento McGeorge satellite campus, and Pacific undergraduates.

Rotations Committee
The Rotations Committee is responsible for gathering rotation site evaluations from the clerkship students. This committee gathers information regarding intern sites from students who have been working at those sites. The information is then compiled into a notebook and available to pharmacy students as a reference. The chair also invites 3rd year students back to campus to share their rotation site experiences with the 2nd year class as they prepare to select their own rotation sites.
